I’m trying to set up Face ID on my iPhone but it keeps failing during the scan and won’t complete the setup. I’ve cleaned the camera and followed the on-screen steps, but it still doesn’t work. Can someone walk me through what I might be doing wrong or what settings I should check to get Face ID working?
First thing, check if Face ID hardware works at all.
-
Check for damage and obstructions
• Look at the front camera area in good light. Any cracks near the top sensor area can break Face ID.
• Remove screen protector and case, even if it looks fine. Some protectors block the IR sensors.
• Clean the top area again with a soft, dry cloth, no liquids. -
Check settings and restrictions
• Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
• Tap “Allow Changes” > Face ID & Passcode. Make sure it is allowed.
• Then go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Enter your passcode.
• Turn off “Require Attention for Face ID” and try setup. You can turn it on again later. -
Check software
• Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Install any iOS update.
• Force restart your iPhone
- iPhone with Face ID: quick Volume Up, quick Volume Down, hold Side button until Apple logo.
• Try Face ID setup again after reboot.
-
Ideal setup conditions
• Hold phone at arm’s length, about 10–20 inches from your face.
• Make sure your whole face is inside the frame, especially forehead and chin.
• Take off sunglasses, heavy hat, mask, or anything blocking your eyes or nose.
• Do it in even light. Not in pitch dark, not with bright light right behind your head.
• Move your head in a slow circle. If your neck hurts or you have trouble, tap “Accessibility Options” on the screen and use “Limited” option. -
Check for software error messages
If it says “Face ID is not available, try setting up Face ID later” and never starts the scan
• Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
This keeps your data, but resets system settings, Wi‑Fi, etc.
• After reset, try Face ID setup again.
If it always fails mid scan
• Turn off “Attention Aware Features” and “Require Attention for Face ID” in Face ID & Passcode, then retry.
• Try with a different background, not a pure white wall or strong window light behind you.
- Hardware check
If none of the above works
• Dial *#06# and check the serial number shows up, just to confirm the phone identifies itself correctly.
• Go to Settings > General > About, check for “Unknown Part” next to “Face ID” or “TrueDepth Camera”. If you see that and this is a used or repaired phone, Face ID hardware might be non‑original or not paired.
• If the phone was repaired before, especially screen or front camera, there is a good chance the TrueDepth module is damaged or mismatched.
At that point, only Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider can fix it. Face ID modules are paired to the logic board, third‑party shops often break that link and Face ID fails forever until Apple replaces paired parts.
Quick sanity checklist to try in order
- Remove protector and case
- Update iOS
- Force restart
- Turn off Require Attention
- Try setup in good, even light, face centered
- Reset All Settings
- Check About page for “Unknown Part” or error text for Face ID
If you share the exact on‑screen error text and your iPhone model, people here can narrow it down more.
Couple of other things to try that @kakeru didn’t cover, or I slightly disagree with:
-
Check if Face ID is actually starting a scan
- When you go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up Face ID, does the circle with the little “move your head slowly” text ever appear?
- If it just sits there or instantly errors, that’s different from failing mid‑scan.
- Note the exact wording:
- “Face ID is Not Available”
- “Face Not Detected”
- or it just says “Move iPhone a Little Lower / Higher” forever.
The exact phrase matters. Apple support literally uses that to split “software glitch” vs “hardware toast.”
-
Try setting it up in the Camera app first
Sounds weird, but:- Open the front camera in the normal Camera app.
- Switch to Portrait mode and Video mode.
- Move the phone closer / farther.
- Check if:
- Focus hunts like crazy
- The image is super blurry in a way that never fixes
- You see weird flickering or green/pink cast around your face
Face ID uses the TrueDepth system, not just the visible camera, but obvious camera weirdness is a red flag that something in that top module is unhappy.
-
Check for region / profile config conflict
Rare, but I’ve seen this:- If you’re using a VPN that always-on, turn it off.
- Temporarily sign out of any MDM / work profile if this is a company device. Some corporate configs quietly restrict biometrics even when the toggle looks allowed.
- If it is a managed / work iPhone, your IT policy might just be blocking Face ID during setup. In that case the UI can be misleading and never directly say “your admin disabled this.”
-
If your phone is used or refurbished
I’ll be a bit blunter than @kakeru here:
On certain used / “refurb” iPhones, Face ID will never work again, no matter how many resets, because:- The TrueDepth module must be cryptographically paired with the logic board.
- If someone swapped the front sensor with a random donor part, the phone will happily do everything except actually complete Face ID.
Signs this might be you:
- Bought it from a random marketplace or small shop.
- Screen was replaced very cheaply.
- Seller said something like “Face ID just needs a reset” or “works sometimes.”
In that case, no software trick fixes it. Only Apple or an actual Apple Authorized shop can put paired parts back together.
-
Check for heat and case pressure
Odd one, but:- If the phone is hot while trying to set up Face ID, let it cool completely first.
- Some super tight cases or ones with thick lips near the top sensor area can apply pressure and slightly deform the housing. Try setup with the case off, but also look closely at the upper frame for any bending.
-
Try a totally different environment
I know this sounds like the “turn it off and on again” of lighting, but:- Go to another room with soft indoor lighting.
- Avoid overhead spotlights or standing in front of a bright window.
- Don’t sit directly under a ceiling light. Try slightly off to the side.
I’ve seen Face ID be way pickier during initial enrollment than during day‑to‑day use.
-
Last resort software nuke (only if you can back up)
If you’re willing to go nuclear:- Back up to iCloud or to a computer.
- Connect to a computer with Finder or iTunes.
- Put the phone in recovery mode and restore the latest iOS.
- Set it up as new temporarily, without restoring your backup yet.
- Before installing any apps, immediately try to set up Face ID.
If it still fails on a clean install with no third‑party apps and fresh settings, that’s basically a hardware verdict.
If you reply with:
- iPhone model
- exact error text
- whether it’s new or used
- whether the screen has ever been replaced
people here can probably tell you in one or two replies if it’s “fixable at home” or “Apple Store time.”
